The act of opening an invitation should inspire the same delight and anticipation as a lovingly wrapped gift – Cristina Re

I am far from being an expert in the paper crafts field but I am truly passionate about ‘creating an experience’ each time someone opens a card, unwraps a gift or reads an invitation.   In fact I apply this to everything in life… Creating an ambience and theme at an event (even if it’s just coffee at my place) is something I thrive on… My intention is to help people feel special and loved… There are so many elements that help inspire this thought… At the top of the list is Cristina Re‘s incredible DIY paper range, accessories and flagship store.  Her collection is delectably beautiful, featuring a diverse range of colours and styles from ‘garden-party green to French provincial blue.’

It’s not only the paper, but more so the experience of arriving at her boutique, Where a Girl Goes (WAGG). As Cristina says,

“It’s where a girl goes for high tea with friends. It’s where a girl goes to spoil herself and her loved ones.”

I just love spending time in the store… The experience starts by perusing the spectacular paper range of vintage patterns and decorative designs inspired by “the world’s finest homes, palaces and galleries.”   To truly experience the beauty of the store, you must try the tea and of course a macaroon!  I think I enjoy these macaroons more than the ones in Paris!

A few months ago I did a workshop at the Paper Academy at WAGG.   My girlfriends and I had a wonderful day filling up on plenty of creative ideas and tricks of the trade!  Below, I’ve included some of the work I completed during the course as well as some other recent pieces.   The night before the course my friends surprised me by giving me my birthday present a week early!  They were afraid that I would buy everything in the WAGG store so they wanted to give me my gift earlier just in case… They had bought me the paper trimmer, craft knife, decorative scissors and even Cristina’s printing software ‘Print Station’ featuring a variety of templates and tutorials to get you started on your paper craft journey!  And I have not looked back since!  Thank you to my amazing friends, to my incredibly cute husband (who just bought me some Cristina Re teacups and lemongrass tea for Mother’s Day, plus a few macaroons hehehehe) and of course – to the team at Cristina Re who never fail to impress!  You’re all unbelievably talented!  I can’t wait to do another workshop real soon!

Here’s some of my recent paper creations… XOXO

Sending love, light and glorious paper your way,

I have just been enchanted by this beautiful award winning portrait of Baz Luhrmann by Melbourne Artist Vincent Fantauzzo.  (Go Vinnie!)

This raw piece is incredibly poignant because it is a portrait of a man who is so obsessed by passion and extravagant, enduring love stories who appears to be terribly vulnerable and exposed.   On a deeper level it exemplifies the interconnection between Baz’s key subjects in film – ‘Romance and Tragedy.’   I believe vulnerability is a beautiful thing… It keeps us alive… It keeps our feet on the ground and makes us truly able to connect and love others…

VINCENT Fantauzzo has won this year’s Doug Moran National Portrait Prize for his painting of Baz Luhrmann. The prize, which is worth $150,000, is the most lucrative painting prize in Australia. Fantauzzo says the work, entitled Baz Luhrmann Off Screen, shows the famous director in a vulnerable moment. – Herald Sun

Love, light and vulnerability to you,

Well I’ve always been a fan of Chanel (specifically the fragrances), but I love the commercials (mini films) even more!!

I am always inspired and taken away to another place when I watch a Chanel advert… I’m even more impressed with the 2011 campaign featuring the smouldering Keira Knightley, clad in a beige catsuit!   It’s different to the usual Chanel ads, this one is hard edged and full of female boldness – whereas the usual ads feature a more elegant female protagonist.  I love how this one screams SEXY!    As she zips through the chic streets of Paris on her vintage motorbike, we are taken on a journey to become the Mademoiselle!   I’m sure the guys will agree this is a stella piece – they’ll particularly love when Director, Joe Wright, shoots Keira jumping on her bike from the back for a brief while!

Check out some of my other fav Chanel ads… There’s a special place in my heart for Baz Luhrmann’s pioneering Chanel #5 campaign featuring Nicole Kidman – call it National Pride… But it is just exquisite… It screams Baz all over, not to mention eloquence and divine intervention!   Oh and let’s not forget about that famous last scene where Nicole wears the open back dress to reveal Chanel’s pendant of 687 diamonds… Holy!

And of course, how could I not mention the beautiful Audrey Tautou in this stunning Chanel #5 commercial… It’s Billie Holiday’s ‘I’m a Fool to Love You’ which makes this irresistibly cool and awe inspiring… Oh I ‘heart’ Audrey!!

Enjoy…  Sending love, light and good fragrance to you!

When it comes to Television, Paddy Chayevsky could not have said it better!   It’s true that sometimes we think we’d rather be spending time doing something else… Something more productive… But often we become absorbed by the power of Television… So here I am embracing this love/hate relationship we have with our TV sets.   Yes sometimes I agree with Leo Anthony Gallagher who said, “I wish there was a knob on the TV so you could turn up the intelligence!”  But sometimes, just sometimes you can be so moved, so enchanted and so touched by Television that everything else is forgivable.   For me, there have been many moments that have evoked something truly special… And changed my life forever… So many wonderful moments in Television history – Too many to mention –  So I’d like to share with you 3 favourites in recent times…  I’d also like YOU to share the moments in Television that have moved you?     I couldn’t begin to describe the moments in Cinema – so I’ll leave that for another day…

Here goes…

1). The Carousel – Mad Men

In this poignant scene from Mad Men (Season 1), Don Draper pitches his advertising campaign for the Kodak Wheel (Slide Projector).  I never tire of this scene, in fact I’ve watched it over and over again… Each time nodding my head and saying ‘yes, that’s so true!’  Maybe it’s because it reminds me of all the times we’d sit in our living room as a family, flicking through slides and memories of days gone by… We’d laugh and cry watching our family evolve… Seeing our grandparents change and our siblings grow…  The ‘Carousel’ would take us on a journey , travelling through our memories… And as Don says, “It takes us to a place where we ache to go again.” There’s no doubt the writers of the show are genius – although Mad Men is set in the 60’s, the themes and content are so relevant to todays audience.

Don Draper: Nostalgia – it’s delicate, but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound.” It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. It let’s us travel the way a child travels – around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know are loved…

2). Ross & Rachel Finale – Friends

Does she get off the plane??    Was your heart racing like crazy when you watched the final episode of the beloved Friends?  The scene where Ross listens to his voicemail only to hear Rachel finally making the realisation that she does in fact ‘love him!’   I don’t think I’ve ever been so satisfied by a SITCOM finale!  It was that moment when you hear Rachel say, ‘I got off the plane’ that moved millions of viewers across the globe!   Finally the Ross & Rachel reunion we were all waiting for…

3). Jesse & Kyle Fight & Cliff Jump – Kyle XY

Where do I start with Kyle XY?  Every episode was enchanting… This particular scene was incredibly chilling and left all the Kyle fans on the edge of their seats… If you haven’t seen the program, then you’ll probably watch this with a huge ‘WHAT THE?’   It’s complex and too hard to explain over this blog but I strongly encourage you to watch the program.  I will not promise however that you will be satisfied in the end as millions of viewers have been heartbroken by the axing of the show.   Once I got over the denial that the show wasn’t coming back for a 4th season, I was able to accept it and realise that this show is the most beautiful television series I’ve ever seen… Elements of supernatural together with drama and comedy make this program a winner!   This is the scene featuring the beautiful ‘Save You,’ Jesses’ betrayal to Kyle and subsequent suicide.

Here’s to hoping you’ve enjoyed these 3 clips… And I can’t wait to hear about the Television moments that have changed YOUR life forever… Be sure to drop me a line…

love, light & laughter,

– Carina
